Join the Anza-Borrego Foundation for a peaceful moonlit hike through the desert, where wide-open skies, rugged terrain, and the quiet beauty of the landscape come alive after dark.
What to expect: Under the glow of the moon and stars, participants will experience the sights and sounds of the desert at night, from shifting shadows to nocturnal wildlife. The hike is approximately 2-3 miles roundtrip across natural terrain. Possible wildlife includes scorpions, bats, and owls. The easy-paced hike will be led by wilderness first responder Matt Nagy and is intended to be safe and enjoyable for all ages.
Who should attend: Nature lovers, stargazers, hikers in moderate physical condition who are comfortable walking several miles over sand or dirt trails, and anyone seeking a memorable nighttime outdoor adventure.
What to bring: A headlamp or flashlight, preferably with a red light; sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes; at least two liters of water per person; snacks; and, optionally, binoculars, a camera, star chart, or black light for spotting scorpions.
Meet at the Anza-Borrego Foundation store in The Mall next to Calico’s. The group will carpool or caravan from there to a trailhead that will be confirmed. Start and end times are approximate.
Hike leader: Matt Nagy is a San Diego native and experienced global traveler who considers San Diego County, especially Anza-Borrego, his favorite place. His outdoor experience includes long hikes, bike rides, river trips, bikepacking, and backpacking.
